Erase usb external hd

Because DBAN in dos cannot see the usb external hd, I am forced to use Eraser. But as far as I can tell, there is no easy way to wipe the contents of a drive - unused space and existing files and folders. Or is there?

Thanks

Sure there is, first you delete (not wipe) everything from the drive, and then you erase the unused disk space. Shouldn't be too complicated.

Does this method wipe 100% of the sectors on the disk, or only that which is not used by the file system?

I'm looking to put a hard drive, connected via usb, into a completely wiped state, with no partitions or filesystem. Would the tool KillDisk suggested elsewhere on this forum be better?

Cheers - Callum.
