Erasing Unused Space in Windows XP Causes Reboot

I have yet to be able to succesfully erase unused space in Windows XP Pro SP2. Whenever I run this it causes a sudden reboot when it gets completed with the first phase (cluster tips). I am never able to get any further (not even in Safe Mode). Anyone else experience this?

For info I did manage to run an erase of unused space on a XP machine with SP2. Whilst it worked there were a number of 'failed' items.
