while trying to erase daughter's HD, received this message on a screen full of highlighted characters and numbers "Kernel panic AIEEE Killing Interrupt Handler"
below that the error message read "interrupt handler unable to sync" and the screen was frozen, the process of erasing could not continue. I attempted to try several times, after rebooting, using the different methods shown by the F3 button, but each time the same end result occured. It would start, with the proper screen, then switch abruptly to the error screen.

I need details before I can help you.

What is the make and model of your motherboard?
What is the make and model of your disk?

Edit the A:\SYSLINUX.CFG file and remove all instances of the word "quiet" and try again. This will give you verbose kernel messages.

What do the verbose kernel messages tell you?
