filenames

I have tested a few programs that "destroy" files and there is one thing that puzzles me. With some of them them scrambling of filenames had a weird result. Recovery programs were able to see the scrambled name (obviously) AND the original name (partially or fully) for every file. So, for example, 8 erased files resulted in 16 filenames. How is that possible and where is that information stored (disk is FAT32)?

How about Eraser, does this take care of removing filenames better?

I believe it does, but how about giving it a try and seeing for yourself?
