hard disk geometry after using dban

hello,
my hdd geometry was:

Disk /dev/hdb: 20.4 GB, 20485785600 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2490 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

but after using dban 1.0.6 (quick method) fdisk says:

Disk /dev/hdb: 20.4 GB, 20485785600 bytes
16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 39693 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes

why...? bios has lba option selected.
i've checked fdisk command under knoppix versions 3.9 (kernel 2.6.11) and 3.6 (kernel 2.4.27) but it says the same.

Was the disk formatted by Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me prior to running DBAN on the computer?

yes. it had ntfs partitions formated under windows xp.

39693 cylinders - looks like chs mode, 2490 cylinders - lba mode...?

First, this does not indicate a problem.

Second, the geometry reported for large disks is usually a fiction.

Google for "INT13" if you want to learn more.
