how can i make sure my old files are deleted for good

I have deleted files in the past and I want to make sure there deleted for good. How can I do that?

DBAN is a good method, but it takes your OS with you. If you can tolerate some bits and pieces left around your computer (e.g. in OS hidden areas), then Eraser's Unused Space erase is more suited for your needs.
