A while ago on one of my old computers I reformatted a second HD using NTFS and then erased free space using eraser 5.3 running under XP. It was set to pseudorandom, 3 passes. (Afterwards I installed XP on the blank drive.)
It took several hours but appeared to work fine. There were no error messages or .tmp files to be seen, no crash. Can I be confident that the HD was effectively wiped?
The reason I ask is cos the present faq says that older versions of Eraser (<5.6) ran into problems with free space wipes.
Also, would regular file erasing have worked OK?
