Promise IDE RAID controller

I was hoping to use a 6-port Promise IDE RAID controller to be able to nuke multiple disks at once. Does the B&N kernel support these controllers?

The controller is an SX6000.

Thanks for such a nice program!

Hrm, doesn't seem like it....

As a followup, I attempted to use the floppy Boot and Nuke 1.0.1 to nuke a single disk on the raid controller. Boot and Nuke failed with non-fatal errors, and saved a troubleshooting file to the disk. The file seems to indicate that it can't find anything to nuke.

I plugged the disk in to the onboard IDE controller and the disk is nuking normally. The Promise SX6000 RAID controller did see the disk in its own built-in BIOS.

Here's the log file, sorry for the length:

(Thank you for the verbose post. It is a pleasure to get adequate information.)

The I2O framework was removed after the dban-0.4.0 release. This is the first time that anybody has requested it. I'll see whether I can squeeze it back into the next release.

Thanks for your reply

Thanks for the quick response!

Don't worry about it on my account; I have a bunch of hard drives to purge before I donate them, and I was going to use an existing box I had with that crazy controller. But I can just as easily set up three or more seperate 'nuke boxes' with regular on-board IDE and do multiple simultaneous nukes that way.

In fact, that would probably be better, because I won't as easily overwhelm the processor or RAM.

But, again, thanks for such a great software package. I use it all the time.

By the way, if I were able to get my hands on an internal Iomega Zip 100, where would I send that? We're purging all sorts of stuff, and I may have one of those floating around. I'll have to check for old Western Digital drives, too.

Sure, I would be pleased to accept any spare parts or unusual components. If you send me hardware, then it will become part of my regression suite.

You can send hardware donations to:

Darik Horn
10 Hidden Court
Brantford, Ontario
N3R 6P4
CANADA

Also include some kind of note in the package so that I know from where and why I got it.

TIA

The 1.0.3 beta seems to see this particular Promise controller mentioned above, but it skips it for some reason. From the log:

Code:
ide: Skipping Promise PDC20276 attached to I2O RAID controller.
ide: Skipping Promise PDC20276 attached to I2O RAID controller.
ide: Skipping Promise PDC20276 attached to I2O RAID controller.

Have you considered using two kernels, a smaller one with the most common drivers, and one for the CDROM which has basically everything enabled? That way you wouldn't have to remove support for one thing to add another.

Not being a programmer, I don't know how hard that would be. :)

Thanks again for such a good piece of software.

I have a dialog with a potential sponsor of a fat DBAN release. This product will be released if we can cut a deal.
