Hi,

Has anyone heard of the new(ish?) "secure erase" command in the ATA specs?

According to the pdf documents on this website http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/hughes/subpgset.htm the new secure erase command...

takes place on all drive user data sections as well as re-allocated sectors (the G-list sectors)... enhanced secure erase is superior to multiple pass erase. External block erase passes cannot erase data between tracks

It also mentions the fact that the new command can make the write head go slightly off by 10-15% in order to stop recovery of data from the sides of the tracks.

This seems too good to be true! Does anyone know if it really does do all this stuff and if so is there any chance we could see it being included as part of DBAN?

I'd also like to say thanks to dajhorn for coding Dban, it's a great piece of software :)
