SATA to USB a OS drive, to fully erase unused space

Would it be possible to take a OS drive and connect it to another computer via a sata to usb bridge, then use erasers "erase unused space" method so that it can fully complete this procedure?

I'm asking because the method couldn't erase some files like the index.dat, hibernate file and page file. So could I use the method described above so that the procedure can erase everything that it should?

If you have tried this method before I would really like to hear from you because I'm thinking if I do this then put the HD back to the computer I pulled it from, then there might be a chance for OS boot problems or problems while the OS runs after going to desktop.
