We looked at this before and it caused more problems than it was worth. If its one single drive multhi threading just makes things slower or even locks up the computer.

Are you certain there is not a HDD issue? A free-space erase is one certain way to expose any HDD errors.

Its almost certain you ran a disk erase and not a freespace erase. There is no chance of recovery here. If possible restore your email from backups.

If you want to totally purge the machine of all possible information then you need to use something like DBAN and reinstall the OS afterwards. Eraser is best suited to wiping individual files and old deleted data on the machine. It does not go hunting around for credit card details etc to wipe.

Try using runas Administrator on eraser or turn off UAC.

Have not tried that product but 2G seems like a FAT limitation. Is the secure partition formatted as FAT16/FAT32 or NTFS?

DOD might be faster as PRNG has to get the random bytes each time. The difference should be almost nothing in real terms.
